Torrential rain led to a delay of more than three hours on Friday. Only 32 minutes of play were possible at St. Andrews on Saturday morning before gusts led to another halt — with overnight leader Dustin Johnson having dropped a shot to sit level with Danny Willett at 9-under par.

By mid-afternoon, a restart time of 4 p.m. local time was targeted, with Johnson and Jordan Spieth among 39 players yet to finish their second rounds.

And it was subsequently announced that the third round had been pushed back to Sunday, with the final round taking place 24 hours later.
